How will I be placed on a team?
Recreation players will be assigned based primarily by geographic location. Players are typically assigned to available coaches in the same area. For any random group of 12 players, one parent must be willing to complete a coaches licensing course and be approved through Risk Management. Nevertheless, it is up to each coach to determine where practices will be held. Further, the Vista Soccer Club cannot gaurantee that sufficient coaches will be available in a given geographic location. Considerable effort is made to balance the teams and provide competition that is enjoyable to both players and parents alike.
How will I find out what team I am on?
Your coach will call you sometime in July, after team assignments have been made.
Can I be on a team with all my friends?
For the Fall 2008 Recreation Season you can request one (and only one) buddy. However, your registration form and your buddies registration form must be recieved together either through "mail in" or "walk in" registration. It is your responsibility to submit them together. You also need to make sure that you and your buddy are in the same age grouping. You may be in the same age grouping as a friend every other year, depending on your birthdays.
Why can’t I choose who I want to be on a team with?
Unfortunately, when players and/or parents start choosing up whole teams, the teams can become unbalanced--which isn't much fun. Sometimes several All-Star players that get to know each other during All-Star games, may try to get on the same team together the following season, which unbalances the teams. Further, children may be in the same age bracket one year, but not the next year.
But I have to be teamed up with my friend for car-pool reasons.
Teams are typically assembled from the same geographic location and/or school. You should be able to make car pool arrangements with teammates and their parents if you simply ask. Part of recreation soccer is making new friends.
Ok...so how many practices will there be?
For Spring, one practice per week. For Fall, typically two.
What happens if I forget to register on time?
You will need to pay the late fee and will be placed on a waiting list to see if additional teams with coaches can be formed or assigned to a team that may have lost a player.
Do I get to keep my uniform?
Yes.
Must I wear my uniform to all games?
YES, you must wear your complete uniform at each game. If you are not in your uniform you will be ineligible to play that game. Uniforms consist of a league issued jersey, league issued socks and league issued shorts. You must provide soccer cleats and shin guards.
What else do I need?
For practices you should also have your own soccer ball in the appropriate size along with a drink/water container. Children with orthodontics should consider a mouth guard.
Frequently Asked Questions for Parents
How can I help?
There are many ways for parents to help. The minimum that we ask is for you to be supportive of your child the coach of your team and the Vista Soccer Club as a whole. If you are not willing to support the Vista Soccer Club, please choose another type of activity for your child.
You could also be a coach or team parent. Show your support by attending as many games as possible and by helping out during practices, if you can.
Every year we need more coaches. This is a fun and rewarding experience that requires relatively little time, but can have a significant impact on the lives of a number of children. We ask that all of our coaches attend coaching clinic and get licensed by the CYSA. We also require all coaches to be Risk Management Certified through the California Department of Justice. As a member of CYSA we have adopted the USYSA KidSafe program as the foundation for our Risk Management Program. The full details of the CYSA-South Risk Management Program are contained in the CYSA-South Risk Management Manual (as updated July 2001). It is our intent to exclude from participation, at a minimum, all persons who have been convicted of crimes against persons.
If you are interested in coaching contact Laura Versaci @ DirCoaches@vistasoccerclub.org. If you are interested in helping even more, and can invest a lot more time and want to have more responsibility, we have a way! Our league is run by a small, hard-working group of volunteers that serve as the Board of Directors. Every year we need new members. If you are interested, talk to one of the current Board members.
What does a team parent do?
The team parent is the liaison between the Coach and the other parents. She (he) is the person in charge of any fund-raiser(s) for the team. The team parent generally arranges for a female adult (21 or older) to be at all games/practices with girls on the team. The team parent also makes arrangements for parents to take turns bringing after game refreshments and/or planning an "End of Season Party." In addition, the Coach may make other requests, such as asking her (him) to make a few phone calls, such as reminding parents/players of practice times, etc.
What are my responsibilities as a parent?
You are responsible for getting your child to practices, games, and other team functions on time (for games this often means at least 30 minutes prior to game time) and picking up your child promptly afterwards, unless other arrangements are made with the Coach ahead of time. Please do not rely on the coaches for transporting your child to and from games. They aren’t baby-sitters.
You must also:
Attend league and team functions whenever possible.
Obey all league rules and provide full and complete support to the Vista Soccer Club.
Maintain a two way line of communication with the Coach. You should keep each other advised of scheduling changes or problems involving attendance at games and/or practices. Call in advance if your child will miss a practice or game.
Attend as many games as possible and cheer for all the players. Derogatory remarks or gestures and other unsportsmanlike behavior will not be tolerated by our league. Your interests and participation are highly desirable, but remember to let the coaches do their jobs. Negative remarks to the Referees will NOT be tolerated. Referees are in full control of the entire game and may eject you from the area. If you have an objection or a complaint to lodge, notify the VSC Board of Directors in writing.
Keep the area around the field of play free of trash. The VSC has agreements with schools and parks and if the fields are littered, we will lose our ability to use the fields.
Leave dogs at home. They are not allowed on the fields we use.
Keep other children off the field and out of trouble. Children should not be allowed to play without supervision.
What else can I do?
If you are interested in the welfare of the Vista Soccer Club, get involved in the administration of league. Regardless of your skills or background, you can be involved with the sport in a meaningful way. Some of the functions that need to be carried out include:
Division Coordinators: The glue that keeps it all together. Division Coordinators function as the communications network between the VSC and the coaches and parents in a specific Division. Prior to the season, Division Coordinators help assemble team packets (binders, uniforms and equipment) and/or assist in team assignments. Using e-mail, phones and faxes, Division Coordinators advise coaches of meetings, licensing courses and clinics as well as schedule changes for games, pictures and tournaments. They also report field issues and problems, collect referee cards (scores), maintain standings and get our game results with the names of outstanding players into the North County Times each week. Division Coordinators also give input to the Director of Coaches at the end of the season on which coaches have earned the opportunity to Coach All-Star Teams.
Field Coordinators: The ones that make Saturday games go. Field Coordinators deliver and retrieve nets and corner flags to the fields our children play on, unlock goal posts, and report problems with fields and goal equipment. Field Coordinators also report any concerns about trash left on the fields at the end of the day, and make an effort to clean any problem areas.
Field Marshals: Overseers of Post-Season play. Field Marshals make an ‘all day commitment’ for Divisional Playoffs and All-Star Tournaments. They staff a table to answer queries and direct teams to locations as needed; check-in and inspect players and their equipment, and; track results on score sheets.
To volunteer, contact Chris Robbins @ President@vistasoccerclub.org or by phone at (760) 940-8804.
How can I register a complaint?
We encourage you to talk to your coach first. Communication is very important! The coach can resolve it or pass it along to the Division Coordinator, who will communicate with the BOD if necessary. If you feel you cannot talk to the coach, or if you do not achieve satisfaction by that route, feel free to call the Division Coordinator or leave a message on the VSC phone and a board member will return your call.
Can my child be put on a particular team, particular coach or on a team with a particular player for transportation reasons?
For the Fall 2008 Recreation Season your child can request one buddy. However, your registration form and your buddies registration form must be recieved together either through "mail in" or "walk in" registration. The purpose of the VSC Recreational League is to foster a love for soccer and allow our players to develop the skills to play at higher levels of competition. To this end we strongly feel that balanced team play can only further enhance the soccer experience for our kids. Because of the nature of providing balanced teams, VSC cannot honor extensive requests for multiple players to be placed on specific teams with friends, for carpooling purposes, or with specific coaches. If competition is that important to you, please tryout for our competitive STORM teams. (Siblings are the only exceptions. Siblings must be living in the same household and have at least one parent in common.)
What are the times and dates of practices?
Sorry, we don't know the answer to that one, but your coach will. There are no league requirements about times, dates or locations for practices. We have about 140 coaches (plus assistant coaches and team parents) who volunteer each year. Depending on their work or personal schedules, they usually pick the best days that they can be there. In the Fall, typically most coaches hold 2 practices a week lasting 1 to 2 hours per practice--in the Spring, typically 1 practice per week.
